New SAT Reading Common Wrong Answers
Although the SAT is perhaps less tricky than it was in the past, that doesnââ¬â¢t mean you donââ¬â¢t still need to be on your guard. The New SAT Reading section is in some ways even better at luring you into tempting wrong answer choices because many of them seem so plausible. The new SAT is all about close and careful reading, so tread cautiously when it comes to the answer choices and always go back to the passage. New SAT Reading Wrong Answers Here are some of the reasons wrong answers on the new SAT are just so darn tantalizing: 1. The answer is true based on information in the passage Sometimes an answer choice is wrong because it doesnââ¬â¢t actually answer the question being asked. Sure, you can find supporting text for this wrong answer choice, but since it is not answering the specific question being asked, itââ¬â¢s not the right answer. 2. The answer sounds plausible This is particularly true on the new SAT Reading test. Many of the answer choices will seem to be ââ¬Å"on themeâ⬠with the main idea of the text. You may even think you remember reading a wrong answer choice in the passage. This is where careful reading comes in. You should always be going back to the text to backup your answer; you may find that the passage says something a little bit different from what you remembered, meaning this wrong answer is related, but not a precise recollection of the test. 3. The answer relates to the SAT Reading passage (but distorts its meaning) Be careful! Did the passage actually say what the answer choice is saying? Or did it just talk about something similiar? Or did it talk about the opposite of what the answer choice says? Again, always go back to the text and stay true to your overall understanding of the main idea and authorââ¬â¢s purpose. 4. The answer uses words and phrases from the SAT Reading passage (but incorrectly) Sometimes you are going to struggle with understanding a part of the passage. If a question deals with this part of the passage, youââ¬â¢ll often find yourself going straight for the answers in the hope that they will offer some guidance. Doing so, however, is dangerousââ¬âthe SAT is waiting for you. It will often take words that appear in the passage and throw them into an answer. But if you are not processing the entire answer choice, and are just grasping on to those familiar words, you are likely to become trapped. 5. The answer is too specific or too general Particularly for big-picture questions such as the main idea of the passage or a paragraph, or the purpose of a passage or section, make sure you donââ¬â¢t pick an answer choice that only mentions part of what the entire paragraph/passage addresses or something that is far bigger than the scope of the passage. 6. The answer seems ok (but not the best) This one is specific to the Command of Evidence questions youââ¬â¢ll find on the new SAT, the ones where you have to pick the best lines of evidence in the text to support your answer to another question. Be careful to check all of the answer choices! You might come across an answer choice that seems to be decent support for the answer to the previous question (or at least you can rationalize that it is), but there might be a BETTER line to quote. So make sure you look at all of the options, even though it may feel tedious. 7. The answer is almost referring to the right line This one is also specific to the Command of Evidence questions on the new SAT. The answer choices will look something like this: A. Lines 32-35 ââ¬Å"The witchâ⬠¦.her prey.â⬠Sometimes you might see another answer choice that looks like this: B. Line 32 ââ¬Å"The monsterthe muffins.â⬠In this case the same line number appears in both answer choices, because their respective text share a line, and if you arenââ¬â¢t being careful you might pick the wrong one, even though you correctly identified where the answer was. So be super careful you are looking at the right lines. Below is a short paragraph with an SAT question following it . Your goal is to read the passage and answer the question (duh!), but, more importantly, to determine which wrong answer choices fall into which category above. Once youââ¬â¢ve done this, look at the analysis below the passage to see if you are right. SAT Reading Practice Passage for the Redesigned SAT Arvo Parts famous musical composition Cantus in Memoriam Benjamin Britten begins and ends in silence. After three beats of stillness, one musician rings a bell three times with the slow solemnity of a death toll. The sounds of silence and death give way to the pure voice of strings which flows along in their wake. After a sublime, sorrowful opening in A minor, the violin beckons the warmer C major scale into the pulse of the piece. The strings follow one another on a quest for the deepest note, until finally each holds a long, steady low C, then breaks into silence. It is just one of Parts modern compositions in the classical style, and it perfectly reveals the man and his music. SAT Reading Practice Question The main purpose of the paragraph is to: A. explain the purpose of Partââ¬â¢s music. B. describe the experience of listening to Part. C. explain how Partââ¬â¢s musical composition reveals his personal feelings. D. demonstrate the importance of silence in music. SAT Reading Question Explanation and Analysis First of all, the answer is B. The paragraph describes the movements of a piece of music, focusing on the listeners subjective experience as he or she listens to the ââ¬Å"slow solemnity of a death tollâ⬠followed by the ââ¬Å"pure voice of stringsâ⬠and so on. Now letââ¬â¢s talk about what makes each of the other answer choices wrong, and why they are such common wrong answers on the SAT: A. Yes, the paragraph is about ââ¬Å"Partââ¬â¢s music,â⬠but go back to the text and look carefully. Is an answer ever given as to its purpose? I would put this answer choice in category 2: ââ¬Å"sounds plausible.â⬠You have to go back to the passage and think carefully. C. There is a phrase at the end of the paragraph that might make this one tempting: ââ¬Å"reveals the man and his music.â⬠And there are sensory words throughout that might seem to reflect feelings: ââ¬Å"sublime,â⬠ââ¬Å"sorrowfulâ⬠etc. But the paragraph does not say anything about Partââ¬â¢s personal feelings. And it does not say that the feelings the music might evoke in listeners are Partââ¬â¢s personal feelings, so be careful of inferring too much. This is a category 3 error: it is based in the passage but distorts its meaning. D. Silence is mentioned several times, making this a tempting answer choice. But be careful! This paragraph is specifically about Partââ¬â¢s music, not music overall. This means this wrong answer choice fits into category 5; itââ¬â¢s too general. When you practice SAT Reading, and review your practice tests, train yourself to look for the patterns in wrong answer choices. Doing so will help you avoid making these mistakes on the real deal.

The Influence of the Renaissance in Shakespeares Work
Itââ¬â¢s very easy to think of Shakespeare as a unique genius with a singular perspective on the world around him. However, Shakespeare was very much a product of the radical cultural shifts that were occurring in Elizabethan England during his lifetime. When Shakespeare was working in theà theater, the Renaissance movement in the arts was peaking in England. The new openness and humanism are reflected in Shakespeareââ¬â¢s plays. The Renaissance in Shakespeares Time Broadly speaking, the Renaissance period is used to describe the era when Europeans moved away from the restrictive ideas of the Middle Ages. The ideology that dominated the Middle Ages was heavily focused on the absolute power of God and was enforced by the formidable Roman Catholic Church. From the 14th century onward, people started to break away from this idea. The artists and thinkers of the Renaissance did not necessarily reject the idea of God. In fact, Shakespeare himself may have been Catholic. The Renaissance cultural creators did, however, question humankindââ¬â¢s relationship to God. This questioning produced enormous upheaval in the accepted social hierarchy. And the new focus on humanity created new-found freedom for artists, writers, and philosophers to be inquisitive about the world around them. They often drew on the more human-centered classical writing and art of ancient Greece and Rome for inspiration. Shakespeare,à the Renaissance Man The Renaissance arrived in England rather late. Shakespeare was born towardà the end of the broader Europe-wide Renaissance period, just as it was peaking in England. He was one of the first playwrights to bring the Renaissanceââ¬â¢s core values to the theater. Shakespeare embraced the Renaissance in the following ways: Shakespeare updated the simplistic, two-dimensional writing style of pre-Renaissance drama. He focused on creating human characters with psychological complexity. Hamlet is perhaps the most famous example of this.The upheaval in social hierarchy allowed Shakespeare to explore the complexity and humanity of every character, regardless of their social position. Even monarchs were portrayed as having human emotions and were capable of making terrible mistakes. Consider King Lear or Macbeth.Shakespeare utilized his knowledge of Greek and Roman classics when writing his plays. Before the Renaissance, these texts had been suppressed by the Catholic Church. Religion in Shakespeares Time Elizabethan England endured a different form of religious oppression than that which had dominated the Middle Ages. When she took the throne, Queen Elizabeth I forced conversions and drove practicing Catholics underground with her imposition of the Recusancy Acts. These laws required citizens to attend worship in Anglican churches. If discovered, Catholics faced stiff penalties or even death. Despite these laws, Shakespeare did not appear to be afraid to write about Catholicism nor to present Catholic characters in a favorable light. His inclusion of Catholicism in his works has led historians to hypothesize that the Bard was secretly Catholic. Catholic characters included Friar Francis ( Much Ado About Nothing),à Friar Laurence (Romeo and Juliet), and evenà Hamlet. At the very least, Shakespeareââ¬â¢s writing indicates a thorough knowledge of Catholic rituals. Regardless of what he may have been doing secretly, he maintained a public persona as an Anglican. He was baptized in and buried atà Holy Trinity Church, Stratford-upon-Avon, a Protestant church.

The North and South -1820 to 1850 The period between 1820s to the 1850s and eve beyond was majorly dominated by the concern about the issue of slavery in America. This was the talk of the time with some advocating for the free will to do with the slaves as they wanted yet others advocating for the total ban on slavery as well as slave trade within the USA. It is worth noting that the North was more of an industrial region and yet he south was more of agricultural region. This was the economic status of these two regions and both needed labor to carry on with their economy. The difference came where the industrial North was ready to pay their employees for the labor they provided yet the South was not ready to pay for the labor that they were provided with in the farms. Rebellion can be described as defiance of anything authority, control, or tradition. In this case Montag plans to rebel against control. Bradbury uses tone to characterize Faber and Montagââ¬â¢s rebellion as futile because Faber does not want to help Montag with his plan. Ray Bradbury uses tone to explain how Montagââ¬â¢s plan becomes useless because Faber does not believe in his plan. Montag went to Faberââ¬â¢s house to tell him about how they should rebel against burning books ââ¬Å"Mr. Montag, you are looking at a coward. I saw the way things were going, a long time back. I said nothing. Iââ¬â¢m one of the innocents who could have spoken up and out when no one would listen to the ââ¬Ëguilty,ââ¬â¢ but I did not speak and thus became guilty myself. And when finally they set the structure to burn the books, using the firemen, I grunted a few times and subsided, for by them. This tone happens when Montag tries to tell Faber his plan. ââ¬Å"Not if you start talking the sort of talk that might get me burnt for my trouble. The only way I could possibly listen to you would be is somehow the fireman structure itself could be burnt. Now if you suggest that we print extra books and arrange to have them hidden in firemenââ¬â¢s houses all over the country, so that seeds of suspicion would be sown among these arsonists, bravo Iââ¬â¢d say! â⬠(pg. 81) When Bradbury writes ââ¬Å"Burnt for my troubleâ⬠, the tone sounds like Faber was not willing to risk his life for the rebellion against books being destroyed. Ray Bradbury uses tone to point out how Montagââ¬â¢s rebellion will be futile because who he came to for help (Faber) does not even want to help him; he just points out the negative things of rebelling. This tone happens when Montag was telling Faber, the people that might be able to help. â⬠Canââ¬â¢t trust people, thatââ¬â¢s the dirty part you and I and who else will set the fires? â⬠(pg. 83) When Bradbury writes ââ¬Å"Canââ¬â¢t trust peopleâ⬠, the tone sounds like Faber believes citizens not being able to be trusted revels that the rebellion will be unsuccessful and should not be done. Ray Bradbury uses tone to show how Faber believes the rebellion will have an unsuccessful ending. In his writing he demonstrates how Faber states things that make Montagââ¬â¢s rebellion very useless. He also shows how Faber shows unwillingness to risk his life just to save books and the idea in books. Also how Faber feels it is too late to try to change the burning of the books. Bradbury writes about rebellion because he does not believe in banning books and believes that people should be aware of all aspects of life. Meaning he revels through his characterââ¬â¢s development that the world he lives in needs transformation.
